EPA Victoria issued a Clean Up Notice requiring the site occupier to assess the level and extent of PFAS contamination in soil and groundwater on and around the premises near Port Phillip Bay. To support this effort, EHS Support’s hydrogeologist assisted the appointed Environmental Auditor with the auditing process. Their contributions included:
- Reviewing the site assessor’s reports including the Sampling and Analysis Quality Plan (SAQP) for the Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), DSI findings, and Conceptual Site Models (CSMs). The hydrogeologist evaluation focused on the complex interactions between PFAS-impacted groundwater, with PFAS identified in seep water along the shoreline. Based on the substantial lateral extent of PFAS both along the shoreline and within Port Phillip Bay, evaluation of ambient sources and other anthropogenic sources was a key focus area for the review.
- Identifying dewatering impacts. The hydrogeological review identified that the dewatering activities from the adjacent level crossing project was impacting groundwater flow direction and contamination migration.
- Assessing groundwater and surface water interaction. Reviewing the Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment in terms of the CSM with a focus on groundwater surface water interaction processes.
- Documenting findings. Review comments were documented in the Audit Issues Register, including tracking responses from the site assessor.
- Reviewing the final report. The hydrogeologist was tasked with providing input and performing a thorough review of the Environmental Auditor Verification report.
- Engaging with stakeholders. Actively participated in meetings with stakeholders for the site.
All the documentation was done in consultation with the appointed Auditor.
