Long-Term Groundwater Monitoring – Anglesea Mine Rehabilitation

EHS Support has been delivering ongoing groundwater and surface water monitoring services for Alcoa’s former Anglesea Coal Mine in Victoria, supporting progressive rehabilitation and long-term environmental management of the site.

Over the past five years, EHS Support has undertaken comprehensive quarterly monitoring programs, including groundwater level measurement, datalogger management, and water quality sampling, across an extensive network of monitoring bores surrounding the rehabilitated mine void.

The monitoring program is designed to track groundwater behaviour and evaluate interactions between the mine water body and surrounding aquifers, including the Upper Eastern View Formation and shallow Demons Bluff Group systems. Data collected over multiple years demonstrates that groundwater levels have responded as expected following cessation of dewatering activities, with deeper aquifers recovering to pre-operational conditions and shallow systems predominantly responding to natural climatic variation.

Water quality monitoring has provided critical insight into geochemical trends within the mine water body and surrounding groundwater system. Results indicate generally stable water quality conditions over time, with no evidence of adverse mixing or migration impacting environmental receptors.

In addition to field monitoring, EHS Support has been responsible for data management, interpretation, and preparation of regular technical updates to support client decision-making and regulatory compliance. The long-term dataset has enabled robust assessment of system behaviour, identification of emerging trends, and refinement of ongoing rehabilitation and water management strategies.

This work represents a sustained, multi-year commitment to environmental stewardship, providing Alcoa with high-quality data and technical assurance to support the successful rehabilitation of one of Victoria’s most prominent former mine sites
