EHS Support was engaged by the Environment Protection Authority of South Australia (EPA) to undertake a Stage 4S Environmental Assessment across a portion of the suburb of Albert Park, South Australia. The report focused on environmental testing carried out across the suburb of Albert Park after TCE contamination was found in groundwater linked to past industrial activity at 24 Murray Street. The work was commissioned by the EPA to better understand the extent of contamination, how it may be moving, and whether it could affect nearby residents.
The latest round of testing involved installing additional groundwater monitoring wells and sampling groundwater and soil vapour at a range of locations across the assessment area. The results suggested that contamination levels in many places may be slowly decreasing over time, although some areas showed higher readings compared to previous monitoring rounds. The findings also suggested there may be more than one source of contamination in the area.
Overall, the study provided an updated understanding of contamination conditions in Albert Park and helped guide the next steps in assessment and management. It confirmed the need for some additional work to better define the extent of contamination in several directions and to further investigate possible up hydraulic gradient sources. This ongoing work supports the EPA’s efforts to protect residents, manage uncertainty, and ensure informed decision-making for the community.
